Coaching

The summer junior section employs numerous coaches to teach our athletes the correct skills for each track and field event. Many of our coaches are very experienced and have produced several New Zealand champions.

Middle distance and cross country juniors (School Years 9+) can follow a coaching programme written by Barry Magee who is Auckland based. The programme is managed by Craig Eustace.

Working together, Barry and Craig have guided many of our teenaged club members to success at national competition level. Don’t be overwhelmed though, all you need to get started is a desire to be the best you can be. You don’t have to start off a champion to become one. Barry’s own running achievements include an Olympic medal, a World Record, and World #1 (amongst a long list of other world class results).

Group Coaching

Group sessions allow individuals to work in a small group on specific running skills such as down-hill or sprints.

Senior runners can seek advice from Robert Holland, a highly experienced coach of athletes at development and performance levels. Robert’s successes include:

  • Oceania Marathon Champion

  • Athletics Canterbury representatives at senior & junior level

  • ANZ Junior road race champion

  • NZSS Junior road race champion

  • NZSS Senior cross country placegetters and selected for NZSS team

  • NZSS placegetters in 400, 800 & 3000m

  • Canterbury SS senior boys cross country champions five years out of six

Many members find the Tuesday speed session will equip them with basic training information. Most after run social occasions will involve a lot of talk about training. The club does have numerous runners who are or have been ranked very highly up to National level.
